YUKI-SIS is pleased to present Yukiko Yanagida: Emerge, on view from Saturday, October 17, through Saturday, October 31, 2026.

Born in 1981, Yukiko Yanagida completed her MFA in Sculpture at Tama Art University in 2005. In addition to presenting solo exhibitions, she has participated in art fairs in Japan and abroad. In recent years, her work has attracted growing interest from prestigious hotels, including Hotel Toranomon Hills, The Westin Tokyo, and Mitsui Garden Hotels. Though quiet in appearance, her works possess a distinctive presence, and have increasingly found their place in public spaces.

Yanagida creates her works using a highly distinctive technique in which an acid solution is applied to titanium while an electric current is passed through it, drawing out color through the metal's chemical reactions. The resulting oxide layer formed on the titanium's surface is perceived by the human eye as color.

Titanium is a metal used in many aspects of our everyday lives, from golf club heads, motorcycle exhaust systems, and eyeglass frames to aircraft components and the plates and screws used in fracture treatment.

Its combination of light weight, high strength, and excellent corrosion resistance makes it an important material in aerospace applications, including aircraft and rockets. Titanium is also well known as the material used for the exterior cladding of the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao, designed by world-renowned architect Frank Gehry.

Yukiko Yanagida’s works are created using a unique technique that brings out color by harnessing the properties of the oxide film formed on the surface of titanium through the application of an electric current. The colors shift with the changing light, whether artificial or natural, and the viewing angle, revealing the distinctive and ever-changing hues unique to titanium.

The title Emerge evokes the gradual unfolding of something that was previously unseen, as it slowly comes into view. Through Yanagida’s touch, colors emerge from the surface of the metal. These colors interact with one another, while the images within her mind respond to and influence each other, gradually taking shape as a unified whole.

en years have passed since Yanagida’s first solo exhibition at YUKI-SIS. In recent years, her work has expanded considerably in its range of expression. Attuned to light, her practice evokes Impressionism through the accumulation of light, while resonating with landscapes and phenomena held in our memories.

“I want to express the process of gathering up light before it has fully come together.”

Yanagida’s work draws inspiration from fleeting phenomena and emotions, as well as vague memories and dreams.

We live with waves of thought that are constantly shifting and changing. Everyday incidents from the past, landscapes we have encountered, and the truths that suddenly surface within us through these experiences—truths that exist only in a single, fleeting moment.

As we contemplate her quiet abstract works, fragments of our own memories begin to overlap with the images on the canvas. When the work connects with each viewer’s personal memories, it becomes something uniquely meaningful to that individual.

【Artist Note】

Emerge

Artist Note

For me, coloring titanium is a process of bringing out colors that were previously unseen.

As I engage with these colors, I layer my own forms and compositions onto them. My practice evolves through the repetition of this ongoing dialogue.

For this exhibition, alongside new works, I will also present several pieces newly created based on the compositions of works I exhibited ten years ago, when I held my first solo exhibition at YUKI-SIS.

Returning to the same compositions after all these years has allowed me to discover things that I could not have seen before.

I believe that the accumulation of time itself has become part of these works.
