In this exhibition, in addition to new paintings, we will also be screening the following animation works created up to 2026.

YUKI-SIS is pleased to present Sumito Sakakibara Solo Exhibition — WORKS ~ 2026, on view from Saturday, May 16 to Saturday, May 30.

榊原澄人は1980年北海道・十勝生まれ。1996年、単身渡英。文化庁海外派遣生を経て2004年RCA（英国王立芸術大学院）アニメーション科博士課程修了。帰国後は、長野県を制作の拠点としています。

文化庁メディア芸術祭大賞受賞作品「浮楼」、DOMANI展（2015）にて大絶賛を浴びた「É IN MOTION No.2」、そしてスパイラル30周年記念展「スペクトラム」で発表された「Solitarium」をはじめとするアニメーション映像作品で知られ、美術館やアートフェスティバル等での上映、そして海外の多数の映画祭で作品が招待上映、受賞多数。また2021年制作された「飯縄縁日-Iizuna　Fair-」は、2021年長野県立美術館改装後初の展覧会として発表され、常設展示として現在も上映されています。同作では世界中のアニメーションフェスティバルで数々の受賞、招待を受け、その才能が世界で注目されるアニメーション作家です。

Sumito Sakakibara was born in 1980 in Tokachi, Hokkaido. In 1996, he moved to the United Kingdom on his own. After participating in the Agency for Cultural Affairs’ overseas fellowship program, he completed the doctoral program in Animation at the Royal College of Art (RCA) in 2004. Since returning to Japan, he has based his artistic practice in Nagano Prefecture.

He is widely known for his animated film works, including Flow, which received the Grand Prize at the Japan Media Arts Festival; É IN MOTION No.2, which was highly acclaimed at the DOMANI Exhibition (2015); and Solitarium, presented at the Spiral 30th Anniversary Exhibition “Spectrum.” His works have been screened at museums and art festivals and have been officially invited to and awarded at numerous international film festivals.

In 2021, his work Iizuna Fair was unveiled as the inaugural exhibition following the reopening of the Nagano Prefectural Art Museum and continues to be shown there as a permanent installation. The work has since received numerous awards and invitations from animation festivals around the world, further establishing Sakakibara as an animation artist of international acclaim.

現在、榊原は2027年に完成予定の新作アニメーション「子どもたちの霊歌―Children’s Hymn-」を制作中。この作品は、絵巻物のように展開していくアニメーション作品、【É in Motion No.2】　2013, 【飯縄縁日―Iizuna Fair-】2021に続く3部作の最終章となる予定です。前2作品では、共通して世界を俯瞰し、同時多発的に行われているそれぞれの出来事を、時空間を超えながらも淡々と綴ってきました。今展では、最終章の完成を待ちつつ、今までのアニメーション作品で描かれてきたイメージを新作のペインティングでご紹介する他、榊原が2026年までに制作したショートアニメーションを多数ご覧いただきます。

Currently, Sakakibara is working on a new animation project titled Children’s Hymn, scheduled for completion in 2027. This work is planned as the final chapter of a trilogy that follows the scroll-like animated works É in Motion No.2 (2013) and Iizuna Fair (2021).

Both earlier works shared a panoramic perspective of the world, calmly depicting multiple events unfolding simultaneously while transcending time and space. In this exhibition, while awaiting the completion of the trilogy’s final chapter, visitors will be introduced to new paintings inspired by the imagery developed throughout Sakakibara’s previous animation works, alongside a large selection of short animations created by the artist up to 2026.

榊原の作品においてループされるのは、一見しては捉えにくい、人間やその行為の内面です。それは直接的に描かれるものではなく、微かな差異や、語られる状況の中で反復されるうちに、徐々に浮かび上がってきます。

登場人物たちは、それぞれの役割を演じ続け、作品は絵巻物のように展開しながらも、同時にひとつの舞台のようでもあり、私たちはまるで劇場の高い客席から、その営みを静かに見下ろしているかのようです。

そこに描かれるのは、時代を超えて繰り返される、純粋で、むき出しで、時に残酷な人間の姿であり、まっすぐな視線。不条理でありながら、確かに現実のなかに存在する、極めて人間的な光景。人々はただ淡々と、それぞれの役割を演じながら生きています。

人は、自らの関心に真っ先に目を奪われるとも言われます。榊原のアニメーションのなかで同時に動き続ける無数のキャラクターたち。そのなかで、あなたは誰に視線を向けるでしょうか。

What loops throughout Sakakibara’s works are the inner lives of people and their actions—elements that are not immediately graspable at first glance. Rather than being depicted directly, they gradually emerge through subtle differences and through repetition within changing narrative situations.

The characters continue to perform their respective roles. While the works unfold like illustrated handscrolls, they also resemble a single theatrical stage, as though we are quietly observing these human activities from the upper seats of a theater.

What is portrayed there are images of humanity—pure, exposed, and at times cruel—that recur across time, along with unwavering gazes. These scenes may appear absurd, yet they undeniably exist within reality as profoundly human landscapes. People simply continue living, calmly and steadily performing their assigned roles.

It is often said that people are first drawn to what most interests them. In Sakakibara’s animations, countless characters move simultaneously across the screen. Among them, which figure will capture your gaze?

この作品は、作家の記憶の中に潜在するイメージや、言葉と沈黙の間を漂うイメージを通して、その想いを360度の円形スクリーン上で描写し、呼び起こそうと制作されました。スクリーンには、作家が生まれ育った北海道十勝の風景や情景、そして北海道の先住民族であるアイヌの神話に基づいた寓話的なイメージが映し出されます。作品内のいくつかの要素は互いに影響を与え合いながらも、それぞれが独立したループとして存在し、複雑で多層的な時間の流れを形成しています。

またこの作品は、観る者がイメージの断片を自由に結びつけ、自ら物語を構築することを許す神話的な構造を持っています。360度の円形スクリーンに映し出されるのは、歪んだ時間（同時性／リゾーム）と空間（フラクタル）が不調和かつ雑多に交錯する関係性であり、失われつつある世界と、これから訪れる世界を静かに見つめる作品なのです。

Through series of images that are latent within the artist‘s memories and images that are drifting between words and silence, the works tries to portray and recollect emotions in a 360 degree circle-scope screen. The picture displays scenery and landscapes of Hokkaido where the artist was born and raised along with images of allegory based on Ainu-the indigenous people of Hokkaido-mythology. Some of the elements in the work are affected by the others, creating complex and multiple time sequences while maintaining their loops independently. The work also represents mythological structure in which the viewers are allowed to associate fragments of images and construct stories by themselves. What you would find on 360 degree circle-scope screen is an incongruous and motley relation of warped time (synchronism/ rhizome)and space (fractal), a work that quietly observes the world that is about to be lost and the world that is forthcoming.

長野県・飯綱山麓に居を構える作家本人の観る世界、Inner Landscape (内在的原風景)を北信の風景を織り交ぜながら描き出す一大縁起絵巻。各要素が全体運動の中で互いに溶け合い、時空やヒエラルキーといった概念を転覆させるカーニバル作品。

A grand emaki (picture scroll) of origin myths depicting the world as seen by the artist—who resides at the foot of Mt. Iizuna in Nagano Prefecture—interwoven with the landscapes of the Hokushin region and expressing an “Inner Landscape” (inherent primal scenery). Each element merges within the overall motion of the work, creating a carnivalesque piece that subverts conventional notions of time, space, and hierarchy.

2021年「飯縄縁日」が長野県立美術館常設展示に収蔵。2022年同作オタワ国際アニメーション映画祭で最優秀ノンナラティブ賞受賞。Weird Market映画祭最優秀賞受賞。

国立新美術館、清須市はるひ美術館、名古屋芸術大学アート＆デザインセンター、長野県立美術館、おぶせミュージアム,大阪万博関連事業 中之島パビリオンオンフェスティバル棟、国内外で映像祭、美術館での展示、上映多数。2026年9月には、カナダ・オタワ国際アニメーション映画祭に特集上映予定。

Born in 1980 in Tokachi, Hokkaido. In 1996, moved to the UK alone. After being selected for the Agency for Cultural Affairs’ Overseas Study Program for Artists, completed a Ph.D. in Animation at the Royal College of Art (RCA) in 2004.

British Academy Film Awards (BAFTA) in the Short Animation category, and awarded the Grand Prix at the International Manga and Anime Festival.

In 2021, Iizuna Ennichi was added to the permanent collection of the Nagano Prefectural Art Museum. In 2022, the same work received the Best Non-Narrative Award at the Ottawa International Animation Festival, as well as the Grand Prize at the Weird Market film festival.

The artist has held numerous screenings and exhibitions both in Japan and abroad, including at The National Art Center, Tokyo; Kiyosu City Haruhi Art Museum; Nagoya University of the Arts Art & Design Center; Nagano Prefectural Art Museum; Obuse Museum; and the Pavilion On Festival Hall, part of the Osaka Expo-related projects.

The artist is also scheduled to be invited to the Ottawa　International Animation Film Festival in Canada　in September 2026.
