【木版画の源流をたどって：インドから日本へ】

木版画のルーツはインドにあると言われています。インドで今でも行われている布などのテキスタイルへの木版印刷(ブロックプリンティング) の起源は古代にまで遡ることができ、インダス文明(紀元前2500年頃)からその痕跡が見られます。また、テキスタイルの文様は仲間の社会的、文化的なアイデンティティを反映し時代の進展とともに、手工芸の一環としてのブロックプリントは、商業的な価値を持つようになり、民族的アイデンティティの象徴となりました。飛鳥時代に中国より日本へ仏教と共に木版印刷が伝来し、江戸時代に分版による多色木版画の技法が確立し、色鮮やかな木版画が流行していきました。現在のインドでは手工芸として版画だけでなく、アートとしての版画が現代のアーティストたちにより積極的に制作されています。

この展覧会ではインドのアーティストたちに日本の越前和紙に摺ってもらった版画作品を展示します。和紙は、日本のアーティストにとっても依然として多くの探求の可能性を残した素材であり、インドのアーティストにとっては新規の素材を使った作品となります。これまで多くは紹介されることの少なかったインドの現代版画と、伝統と現在が混じり合う日本の現代木版画をぜひご覧ください。

It is said that the roots of woodblock printing can be traced back to India. The origin of block printing on textiles, such as fabrics, which is still practiced in India today, dates back to ancient times, with traces found as far back as the Indus Valley Civilization (around 2500 BCE). The patterns on these textiles have long reflected the social and cultural identities of their communities. Over time, block printing, originally a part of traditional handicrafts, gained commercial value and became a symbol of ethnic identity.

Woodblock printing was introduced to Japan from China along with Buddhism during the Asuka period. In the Edo period, techniques for multi-colored woodblock prints using separate plates were established, and vividly colored woodblock prints became popular.

In contemporary India, printmaking is actively pursued not only as a traditional craft but also as a form of fine art by modern artists. This exhibition presents prints created by Indian artists using Echizen washi, a traditional Japanese paper. Washi remains a material with great potential for exploration by Japanese artists, and for Indian artists, it offers a new medium for creative expression.

We invite you to experience the contemporary printmaking of India—still relatively unknown in Japan—alongside contemporary Japanese woodblock prints, where tradition and innovation intersect.

【展覧会テーマについて】

日本文化における「彩（いろどり）」とは、色合い、トーン、テクスチャーの微妙なバランスをとり、生活を豊かにする美的感覚であり、四季折々の自然のパレットのようなものである。この版画展における「いろどり」は、絵の具やインクと色の物理的な積層だけでなく、感情、記憶、時間、アイデンティティの積層を意味するメタファーとして機能している。版画は、彫る、インクをつける、刷る、めくるという反復的なプロセスによって、自然と平和でリズミカルな瞑想である「いろどり」の精神に重なる。この展覧会では、従来の木版画から革新的なミクストメディアの手法まで、すべての作品が色彩と主題との相互作用を反映しており、それゆえに自然体験と人間体験の両方と共鳴する。すべての版画は、シンプルな色調の控えめな美しさであれ、モダンなパレットの鮮やかな衝突であれ、はかなさ、存在感、可能性に語りかける視覚的な俳句であり、人生の多様性に対する瞑想である。

【About the Exhibition Theme】

In Japanese culture, irodori refers to an aesthetic sensibility that enriches everyday life through a delicate balance of hue, tone, and texture—much like a seasonal palette drawn from nature. In this print exhibition, irodori functions not only as a physical layering of pigments and ink, but also as a metaphor for the layering of emotions, memories, time, and identity.

The process of printmaking—carving, inking, pressing, and revealing—resonates with the spirit of irodori as a peaceful, rhythmic meditation rooted in nature. From traditional woodblock techniques to innovative mixed-media approaches, each work in the exhibition reflects an interplay between color and subject, creating connections to both the natural and human experience.

Whether expressed through the quiet elegance of subtle tones or the vibrant clash of a modern palette, each print becomes a visual haiku—speaking of impermanence, presence, and potential. Collectively, the works form a meditation on the rich diversity of life.

DEDICATION

The Japanese idea of harmony is shown in IRODORI: Echoes of Life, Layers of Colour through colour, texture, and emotion. This printing show looks at memory, identity, and time through complicated processes. Every piece becomes a visual haiku, using ink to express healing, connection, and impermanence, and making people think about beauty in a changing world.

献辞（DEDICATION）

日本の「調和」の思想は、《彩 ― いのちのこだま、色のかさなり》の中で、色彩、質感、感情を通して表現されています。この版画展は、記憶、アイデンティティ、そして時間というテーマを、複雑な技法を用いて探求しています。

それぞれの作品は、癒しやつながり、そして無常を墨で表現した視覚的な俳句となり、移りゆく世界の中にある美しさについて観る者に問いかけます。

展覧会経緯について：

2025年2月にインドのニューデリーにあるインドの版画団体Graph Initiativeと、特定非営利活動法人国際木版画会議日本委員会の共同で開催したJAPAN FOUNDATION NEW DELHIでの印日版画交流展の成功を受け、日本での展覧会開催を企画しました。インドでの展覧会はインドと日本両国の版画家の芸術的な交流を促進する上で大きな前進となりました。今回の日本での展覧会によって、両国の版画家のさらなる芸術的、文化的な融合を促進し、木版画の持つ新たな価値を創造していきたいと思います。

About the Background of the Exhibition:

Following the success of the India-Japan Print Exchange Exhibition held in February 2025 at the Japan Foundation New Delhi—jointly organized by the Indian printmaking organization Graph Initiative and the Japan Committee of the International Mokuhanga Conference (a certified NPO)—we have planned this exhibition in Japan.

The exhibition in India marked a significant step forward in fostering artistic exchange between printmakers from both countries. With this exhibition in Japan, we aim to further deepen the artistic and cultural fusion between Indian and Japanese printmakers and to explore and create new value in the art of woodblock printing.
