YUKI-SIS is pleased to present Regina Sell’s solo exhibition “Touch of infinity” curated by Dr. Rania SID OTMANE from February ８ (Sat) - 22 (Sat), 2025.

レジーナ・ゼルはドイツ、ミュールハイム・アン・デア・ルール生まれ。クレーフェルトのニーダーライン応用科学大学でグラフィックを学び、シュトゥットガルトの州立美術アカデミーでルドルフ・スコーフス教授の下、自由絵画と自由グラフィックアートを学びました。現在、ベルリンにて創作活動を行っています。

Born in Mülheim an der Ruhr, Germany Graphics studies at the University of Applied Sciences Niederrhein in Krefeld. Study of Free Painting and Free Graphic Arts at the State Academy of Fine Arts in Stuttgart with Prof. Rudolf Schoofs. Lives and works in Berlin.

彼女の作品との出会いは、2024年9月にドイツ・ベルリンにて開催されたPOSITIONS BERLINというアートフェアでした。色のある、直線的な抽象作品が多く並ぶドイツのアートフェアの中で、静かな佇まいを持つ彼女の作品はかえって印象に残りました。どこか日本人である私がよりどころにしている、「禅」の世界に近いものを感じたのです。彼女も、向かいにある私のブースの作品を眺め、同じような印象を受けたのか、何度もブースに訪れてくれ、カタログをくれました。日本に帰ると、彼女からメールが届きました。その後私も再度ベルリンに行く用事があり、ぜひスタジオに来てほしいと誘われ、訪ねることにしました

My first encounter with her work was at the art fair POSITIONS BERLIN, held in Germany in September 2024. Among the many abstract works with bold colors and straight lines displayed at the German art fair, her pieces stood out for their quiet presence and left a strong impression on me. There was something in her work that resonated with me as a Japanese person, something akin to the world of "Zen." She, too, seemed to have felt a similar impression as she looked at the works in my booth across from hers. She visited my booth several times and gave me a catalog. After returning to Japan, I received an email from her. Later, I had another reason to visit Berlin, and she invited me to visit her studio, so I decided to go.

白いスタジオに並んだ真っ白な作品たち。それは異空間でした。白いキャンバスから出現する世界。近寄ると無数の細かい線が描かれ、離れるとそこから生まれる空間と存在がありました。傍らに置かれた短くなった無数の２Ｂの鉛筆たち。彼女は鉛筆の濃さをH,HB,B…など鉛筆の種類を変えるのではなく、２Bのみの鉛筆によってすべての線を描いているといいます。

彼女の作品を眺めていると、私たちの存在の始まりの入り口に立っているような気分になりました。

レジーナ・ゼルの作品はこの何もない白い空間から、命のかけらのようなものを紡いて、その空間にたどり着いているのです。

The white studio was filled with pure white works. It felt like an otherworldly space. A world emerging from the white canvas. As I got closer, I could see countless fine lines drawn, and as I stepped back, there was a sense of space and presence arising from them. Beside her works, there were numerous short, worn-down 2B pencils. She says that instead of changing the type of pencil, such as H, HB, or B, she draws every single line using only a 2B pencil.

As I gazed at her works, I felt as though I was standing at the threshold of the beginning of our existence. Regina Sell's works seem to weave something like fragments of life from this empty white space, ultimately arriving at this profound space.

「ある種の感覚に導かれて線を進めていきます」とレジーナは言います。その過程は、まるで塵の一粒一粒が光にあたって輝き、存在を生み出す景色が見えてくるようです。ふと、彼女は巫女のような人なのだと感じました。作品を観ているうちに、線が動き出し、私の脳はある種の瞑想状態のようになっていきました。

今回の展覧会を開催する際、レジーナ・ゼルの作品を深く理解し、紹介しつづける、世界で活躍するキュレーターのドクター・ラニア・シド・オトマーヌさんにも大変お世話になりました。１人の大ファン、理解者から作品は旅をし始めるといいます。彼女がその人であると思います

今回日本で初めてのご紹介となるレジーナ・ゼルの作品をたくさんの方にご高覧いただけたらと思います。

Regina says, "I am guided by a certain sense as I move the lines forward." In the process, it feels as though each speck of dust is touched by light, shining and creating existence. Suddenly, I felt as though she was like a shaman. As I observed her works, the lines seemed to come alive, and my mind began to enter a sort of meditative state.

When organizing this exhibition, I received invaluable support from Dr. Rania Sid Otmane, a curator active worldwide, who continues to deeply understand and introduce Regina’s work. It is said that once the work begins its journey, it starts with a single fan and understanding person. I believe she is that person.

I hope that many people will have the opportunity to view Regina Sell’s works, which are being introduced for the first time in Japan.

【無限のひとひら】

レジーナ・ゼルの作品は、ドローイングまたは絵画的なドローイングとして位置づけることができます。

シュトゥットガルトの州立美術アカデミーで学んだ彼女は、独自の技法を追求し続けています。抽象表現に移行する中で、最初は卵テンペラと油絵具を混ぜ、様々な顔料をまぜたものをキャンバスに描くことからはじめました。その後、白い下地のキャンバスに黒鉛のドローイングを中心に取り組むようになりました。最初のグラファイト作品は2009年に制作され、今回の展示会場にも展示されています。

彼女は自身で色を混ぜ、光と暗闇のコントラストに従って制作しています。確固とした決断を経て、彼女のグラファイト作品は、クラシックな下地の上で、一筆一筆描かれ、無数の作業プロセスを経て、さまざまなフォーマットで作り上げられます。最初はほとんど感じられないほど繊細に下地に描かれるその線は、次第に存在感を持ち、もしくは繊細でほとんど認識できないまま残ります。作品は強い雰囲気を放ち、異なる照明条件と絶えず相互作用します。

無数の鉛筆の線の中で、ゼルは支配的でエネルギッシュなフィールドを描きます。これらは長時間見ることで動いているように感じられ、宇宙の中の雲のように、凝縮し、また消えていきます。作品は私たちを微妙な方法で、内面への旅に誘うのです。そこには静けさや緊張感があります。これは、ゼルが私たちの内面に深く存在しながらも言葉にされることのない何かを表現し、伝えようとしているかのようです。観客は一瞬立ち止まり、そして無限で時を超えた旅が始まるのです。無限のひとひら。

【Touch of Infinity】

The artistic work of Regina Sell can be characterized as a drawing or pictorial drawing. Trained at the State Academy of Fine Arts in Stuttgart, she works undeterred on her distinctive signature. Turning to abstraction, she first experimented with egg tempera/oil mixed with different pigments on canvas, then focused on graphite drawings on white primed canvas. The first graphite work was created in 2009 and can be seen in today’s venue. The artist mixes her own colors. She relies on the contrast between light and dark. After well founded decisions, her graphite artworks are created stroke by stroke on a classic grounded surface in countless work processes and in various formats. Drawn almost imperceptibly into the ground at the beginning, the stroke becomes more and more present or remains subtle, delicate and barely perceptible. The works radiate an intense atmosphere and interact continuously with different lighting conditions. In countless pencil strokes, Regina Sell draws dominated and energetic fields that seem to move during prolonged viewing. They condense before evaporating again like clouds in the Universe. It challenges us in a subtle way to embark on a journey into our interior. There is silence or tension. This is, as if Regina Sell would intend to present and convey something that is deeply within us but remains unspoken. Viewers pause, and then a timeless and endless journey begins, a touch of infinity.

定義できない感覚に従い、白いキャンバスに描かれた絵は、鉛筆だけを使って一筆一筆進められる、いくつもの段階を経て作られます。最初は、キャンバスにほとんど消えてしまいそうな非常に繊細な線だけしかありませんが、次第に雰囲気や物、影が現れてきます…それらは自然に形を作っていくのです。まるで私がそこにいなかったかのように。

Following an undefined feeling, drawn paintings on white canvas are created in many successive processes, using only a pencil, stroke by stroke. At the beginning there are only very delicate lines that almost disappear into the canvas, but with each further step an atmosphere, an object or a shadow develops... all by itself, as if I wasn't even there.
